“MELTING ICE, SINKING CITIES” CLIMATE ACTION EXHIBITION [This exhibition ended on 31 March 2024]
Antarctica holds enough land ice to raise global sea levels by 60m if melted, posing a direct threat to 40% of the global population with devastating consequences that will ripple throughout our ocean and the entire planet. Glacial melting adds to rising sea levels, affecting ocean currents, increasing coastal erosion, elevating storm surge and disrupting weather patterns. What happens in the polar regions will affect the world, not only impacting humanity, but also compromising biodiversity on land and in water.
CDL, NParks and Ocean Geographic have jointly launched an exhibition themed “Melting Ice, Sinking Cities” on the conservation of the Antarctic at the net-zero CDL Green Gallery in the Singapore Botanic Gardens. Opening in June 2023, the exhibition is held in support of the universal fight to tackle the climate emergency and inspire global net zero carbon emissions.
Leveraging contactless interactive displays, the exhibition takes visitors across five zones:
- A Global Climate Emergency: Spotlighting the Antarctic
- An Urgent Call for Collective Action: A Blue and Green Planet
- Local Action: Marine Conservation in Singapore
- CDL’s Climate Action: Advancing A Low-Carbon and Resilient Built Environment
- The Remains of the Antarctic 2023: Splendour and Hope
The opening ceremony featured Guest-of-Honour Ms Indranee Rajah, Minister in Prime Minister’s Office, Second Minister for Finance & Second Minister for National Development, and Special Guest Dr Sylvia Earle, world-renowned marine biologist and Time magazine’s first “Hero for the Planet”.
