Food Waste Minimisation Forum 2020

 

With the holiday season upon us, it almost certainly means abundance of food at celebrations, as well as an anticipated surge of food waste.

With climate instability caused by global warming and the world’s land and water resources being exploited at “unprecedented rates”, the United Nations warned that the planet’s food supply is under threat, putting dire pressure on the ability of humanity to feed itself. Yet, about one-third of food produced is lost or wasted globally, which amounts to about 1.3 billion tonnes per year. (Sources: IPCC and FAO)

Closer to home, food waste is one of the biggest waste streams in Singapore. The amount of food waste generated has grown by around 30% over the last 10 years. With Singapore importing over 90% of our food supply, more food has to be sourced to meet the food demand, and this affects our food security. When food is wasted, we are also wasting resources, such as land, water and energy, to produce that food. This increases our carbon footprint, contributing to global warming and climate change. In support of the national environment and climate agenda, and as part of City Developments Limited’s ongoing efforts to raise awareness about food waste, we are pleased to put together a timely event “Food Waste Minimisation Forum 2020”. The forum will be held on 16 January 2020, Thursday, at the Singapore Sustainability Academy, from 4.00pm to 5.30pm.
