MY TREE HOUSE
My Tree House is the world’s very first green library for kids. A collaboration between CDL and the National Library Board (NLB), it was opened in May 2013 to cultivate children’s love for environmental conservation, as well as to nurture and empower youth to be environmentally conscious. As such, every detail, from the holistic conceptual design to the materials used in the construction, are not only sustainable but proactively reinforce the overall green concept.
For example, a tree house serves as a beautiful centrepiece of the library, evoking the feeling of a special place for children as featured in storybooks. Constructed from 5,000 recycled plastic bottles collected from the public, the tree house was built using recycled timber for the “trunk”, and the “foliage” comprise an array of recycled items such as PVC pipes, aluminium cans, plastic bottles, and recycled paper origami.
My Tree House is also home to “The Weather Cloud”, which pulls from a live feed of Singapore’s environmental conditions, changing the colour of the cloud as the weather changes.
About a third of the 84,000 books in the library cover environmental-related topics such as animals, plants and nature, and it has remained a highly popular section at the Central Public Library located within the National Library Building.
In 2019, more than 220,000 people visited My Tree House and borrowed more than 620,000 books. Close to 11,000 participants took part in 188 programs, such as the sharing by young eco-champion Mr Barney Swan, who shared his exciting expedition to Antarctica using renewable energy.
My Tree House has been extensively covered by the media. Click here to watch one of the videos by Lianhe Zaobao.
